GEORGE MITCHELL

George started life in Kenville, MB which is up by Benito/Swan River area where his parents owned a farm.  His Dad was hurt in the war so eventually moved the family south to the Douglas area where he could find work at the base in Shilo.

George as a young man joined them here and following his Grandfather's funeral in Killarney, stayed to take on a job with his uncle.   He became friends with some neighbours and would go hunting and camping with them.  They invited him to visit their home where the wife also played guitar.   Many musical evenings ensued.    When that marriage broke up George and his playing partner eventually fell in love and were married a few years later.

George now has 2 children, 3 stepchildren and (he thinks) 35 grandchildren!

George says his inspirations were Wilf Carter and Hank Snow. He now travels extensively in USA, Sask and Manitoba playing for his own enjoyment (and ours!!). He played in a band called "Silver Strings" from 1962 to 1969.

George has become an integral part of the Jams scene in Westman. He still lives in Killarney and was recently responsible for our being invited to a weekend Jam at Holmfield where we had a great time and met many musicians from the southern part of Westman.

He is quoted as saying :"Westman Jams allows you to make new friends. Music brings people together"

Congratulations George!
